About The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones emerged from the clubs of early 1960s London to become one of the most influential, dangerous, and enduring bands in the history of rock and roll. Built upon a passionate devotion to American blues and rhythm and blues, they transformed that music into a rebellious sound and image that challenged respectable society and electrified a generation. The group was originally brought together under the direction of Brian Jones, whose musical versatility helped define its early character. Mick Jagger’s provocative stage presence, Keith Richards’s unmistakable guitar style, Charlie Watts’s disciplined drumming, and Bill Wyman’s steady bass created a chemistry unlike anything else in British popular music. Initially promoted as the threatening alternative to the Beatles, the Stones quickly moved beyond cover versions and established Jagger and Richards as a formidable songwriting partnership. Songs such as “Satisfaction,” “Paint It Black,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and “Sympathy for the Devil” captured the frustration, sexuality, alienation, and social upheaval of the era. Behind the success lay intense personal rivalries, drug arrests, financial disputes, romantic scandals, and tragedy. Brian Jones’s declining health and departure from the band, followed by his mysterious death in 1969, marked the end of its first great period. Yet the Stones continued, producing landmark albums including Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St.
