As therapy promises release from restrictions, Byron must decide whether healing means forgetting, or finally finishing something that was postponed too long. Frederik Pohl wrote The Hated during a period when spaceflight was still theoretical but its human costs were already being imagined. Pohl had worked as an editor at Galaxy Science Fiction and published widely in magazines such as Astounding, Galaxy, and If. His fiction often placed ordinary professionals inside systems that claimed to protect them while quietly narrowing their choices, and this story stands as one of his most unsettling examinations of that tension.
