When newly promoted Detective Inspector Matthew Stannard arrives in Craynebrook, he knows his reputation for catching a killer no other detective could catch precedes him. He knows, too, that his colleagues are waiting for him to fall flat on his face. So, when the murder investigation lands on his desk, Matthew realises he can't afford to make any mistakes. All the clues lead to the town's most exclusive social club, where Matthew finds himself drawn into an unfamiliar world of power and influence, and where the members live and play by their own rules. When club members start turning up dead, Matthew is convinced all the murders are connected. His superior orders him to tread carefully, keen to avoid a scandal. But treading carefully isn't Matthew's style; he follows the evidence, wherever it may lead. This has served him well in the past. With this case, it may prove his undoing.
