About Sweet Revolution: The Keto Legacy (Unabridged)

In Sweet Revolution: The Keto Legacy, James Parker presents an imaginative & engaging alternate history of the ketogenic diet, exploring how a confluence of historical events, groundbreaking discoveries, & cultural shifts might have reshaped the health landscape of the 20th century. In 1887 Dr. Thomas Alden, a pioneering physician who tries to find a cure for his epileptic daughter, Lizzy, creates the ketogenic diet. A high-fat, low-carbohydrate regimen that successfully treats Lizzy’s seizures, launching a revolution in medical nutrition. Dr. Alden’s success wouldn't be possible without the support of his wife, Ana whose Eastern European family's steeped in traditions of natural, whole foods, Ana introduces the use of almond flour that becomes a cornerstone of the ketogenic diet. Her use of alternative flours & nutrient-rich foods influences the diet’s development, transforming it into something both nutritionally dense and accessible. Lin Mei, their Chinese cook / housekeeper, also made invaluable contributions. With her knowledge of Asian cooking traditions, introducing the use of coconut flour & monk fruit—ingredients essential to creating keto-friendly foods. Lin Mei’s use of these ingredients set the foundation for low-carb sweeteners & baking alternatives that would later revolutionize the food industry. Dr. Luis Herrera, a close collaborator with Alden, adds his own expertise in stevia, a powerful natural sweetener. His knowledge of stevia plays a crucial role in the development of low-carb, sugar-free foods that could satisfy the American craving for sweetness. Together they create the first iterations of the ketogenic diet—long before it gained any mainstream attention. But the road to acceptance was long. Though revolutionary in the treatment of epilepsy and diabetes, it's met with skepticism by the medical community. Throughout the early 20th century, the Aldens & their collaborators work tirelessly to refine their diet, pushing it into the limelight.
