Die Gangster verunglücken auf der Flucht. Die Tasche, in der das Geld vermutet wird, ist allerdings leer. Die Spur führt zu Gavin Renson, einem der Komplizen. Doch ausgerechnet dieser junge Mann wird wenig später in der Garage von Paul Temples Cottage ermordet aufgefunden. Der Schriftsteller und seine Frau Steve beginnen in dem Fall zu ermitteln. Bald stellen sie fest, dass sich eine junge Frau namens Betty Stanway in großer Gefahr befindet. Sie berichtet den Temples von einem mysteriösen Telefonanruf.
