Während des Umzugstrubels, in welchem sich der kleine Thomas mit seinen Eltern befindet, wird dessen heiß geliebter Plüschdackel auf Rädern, Hoppelpoppel, aus Versehen im Zug zurückgelassen. Der Vater hat keine Wahl - er muss nach Berlin, um passenden Ersatz zu beschaffen, was auch gelingt, aber auf dem Rückweg schließt ein anderer kleiner Junge den neuen Hoppelpoppel in sein Herz und der Vater muss diese schwierige Situation nun zu aller Beteiligten Zufriedenheit lösen.
