In 1848, Engels coauthored The Communist Manifesto (originally the Manifesto of the Communist Party ) with Marx. The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884) is a historical materialist treatise partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society (1877). Originally a series of articles in the New York Daily Tribune , Engels’ Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Germany was first published in book form under the editorship of Eleanor Marx Aveling in 1896. Engels supported Marx financially, enabling him to do research and write Das Kapital . After Marx's death, Engels edited the second and third volumes of the book.
