Von seinem Vater, der während der Okkupation als Jude verfolgt wird, ein Lebemann ist und bei zwielichtigen Geschäften immer wieder Geld verliert. Und von der Ehe der Eltern, einer einzigen Fehlentscheidung. Patrick wird in Internate abgeschoben, flieht, wird wieder eingesperrt und bricht schließlich mit seinem Vater. Er schlägt sich mit kleinen Diebstählen durch, bis er ein Buch schreibt, das auf Anhieb ein Erfolg wird. Atemlos und unsentimental legt Modiano mit dieser autobiographischen Erzählung Zeugnis ab.
