Maar zijn rust wordt al snel verstoord door de brute moord op twee studenten. Robicheaux duikt in dit mysterie waarin een rijke oliebaron, zijn mismaakte broer en diens overspelige echtgenote, een perverse dominee, en een ontsnapte gevangene een rol spelen. Op zijn eigen briljante manier verweeft Burke al deze personages en plotlijnen tot prachtige proza met een verassend einde.
